Environment & Sustainability - Beddgelert Holiday Cottage

Our electricity is 100% from renewable energy wind farms.  Our superb wood burner provides a wonderful warm and cosy environment for our guests and we provide logs that are sustainably sourced locally and worked by our very own heavy horse in the traditional way.   We have also installed half flush toilets,, low energy lighting ,and use pillows and duvets manufactured from plastic bottles.

As founding members of Plastic Free Snowdonia we work with our local community and local businesses to encourage the reduction of single use plastics.  We provide ecological cleaning products using refillable bottles to reduce plastic usage, hand made luxury soaps from The Soap Mine in Beddgelert,  fair trade tea and coffee, re-fillable water bottles and a supply of shopping bags.

We worked hard on the renovation to ensure that the choices we made were good choices for the environment, using natural and locally sourced products where possible. This included natural welsh slate, welsh wool, seagrass and oak flooring and recycled welsh slate roofing.

We have installed extra insulation to the walls, windows and roof, a brand new super efficient combi-boiler for heating and hot water, and A class appliances throughout. Recently we have fitted a remote controlled thermostat so that to avoid any unnecessary use of the heating system. Sorry, we do not have a dishwasher as we feel this is an unnecessary burden on the environmentl All our guests are required to recycle - there are bins for recycling paper, cardboard, aluminium tins/cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles and a wheelie bin for all green waste which is composted.

Guests are encouraged to enjoy and take advantage of the many opportunities to interact with the numerous birds and wildlife in and around the area, including the Osprey project in nearby Nantmor. We have binoculars and a bird reference book on hand so guests can identify some of our many garden visitors.

Guests travelling to us are provided with information on the most sustainable travel options. We encourage visitors to make use of the excellent Snowdon Sherpa bus service, and use the Welsh Highland Railway, both of which link some of the main walking and cycling routes, including Snowdon.

Community

Beddgelert is a beautiful village and in the summer the main trade is, of course, tourism. Out of season we particularly welcome guests at reduced rates to encourage booking and provide the village with much needed custom. It really is the best time to come too, with some of the most perfect walking conditions to be had in the colder months.

We encourage guests to use the village shops and our excellent craft shops and galleries. We also provide useful suggestions and our personal recommendations on things to do and see during our guest's time with us, including local attractions, restaurants and pubs.

We support both the WHR and National Trust and in appreciation we offer generous discounts for volunteers of these organisations staying with us.
